S-Class too expensive? C-Class too small? Then there’s only one
option: The E-Class. Units of the all-new Mercedes Benz E-Class sedan
and coupe are being delivered to first customers as we write. Sri Lanka
will get the right-hand drive versions in the next few months.
The new E promises a host of improvements over the outgoing car and
as always, technology borrowed from big brother S. Mercedes will try to
steal the thunder from Audi, BMW and Jaguar with the new E. In
appearance it is significantly different from the current model, which
has undergone some facelifts over the years.
The distinctive twin headlamp design is retained in another form.
They also feature integrated fog lamps, which eliminates having two sets
of light sources on the front. Elegance and Avantgarde versions will be
available as usual.
Some markets will get an Exclusive package that includes a
wood/leather steering wheel, the roof lining, pillar claddings and sun
visors in Alcantara, the seat upholstery, armrest and door panels in
Nappa leather, an attractively lined dashboard with decorative seams and
velour floor mats.
The new E showcases some all-new safety systems not even found in the
S. One such item is Attention Assist, a drowsiness detection system that
uses feedback from over 70 sensors to monitor behaviour and alert the
driver when the need to take a break becomes evident.
There is also Lane Keeping Assist, which will alert you if you wander
from a lane without signalling.
Others include lights that dim automatically to avoid dazzling
oncoming traffic, proximity control (with auto braking), parking
guidance and reversing camera, Brake Assist and Adaptive Brake system
with Hold function and Hill Start Assist, Electronic Stability Program
(ESP) with acceleration skid control (ASR), improved pedestrian
protection and a plethora of airbags.
Some models will have a start/stop system as well. Mercedes’ Pre-Safe
system, which will pre-charge brakes, roll up windows and bring
seatbacks to an upright position when it detects an imminent accident,
is standard.
The car also has an intelligent `bodyshell ‘ technology with up to 30
per cent greater rigidity, further improved seats and a newly developed
suspension with shock absorbers automatically adjusting to the driving
situation. The usual model numbers will continue from the E200 onwards up
to the E550.
Diesel models will start with the E220 CDI. A hybrid version will
also be available in some markets. The biggest petrol seller is likely
to be the E350, powered by a 3.5 litre engine.
A 7 G Tronic auto transmission is on offer for all cars, while fuel
consumption has been reduced across all engine variants. The new E is
definitely an exciting car. |
