“Wake up wake up Sri Lanka No more war - it’s over Let’s build our motherland The land of our dreams..”
The video created by Crossroads is now being telecast reaching out to
a variety of music lovers. Led by Fabion Bonnie Paul singer/guitarist
this five member band which was formed in February this year is
determined to be a niche for themselves in our music scene. “Prior to
forming my band I played gigs with Wildfire, but told myself that it
would not be a best idea if I started out on my own and that’s how
‘Crossroads’ came about.
The other members of my band are ‘Malla’ Pathum Fernando who plays
bass/electric and box guitar, and contributes to the vocals. There’s
Chamal my drummer, Kanchana my keyboardist who doubles up on bass plays
the harmonica and sings as well. Nalaka the guitarist is also a vocalist
and plays the keyboards.
All our music arrangements are handled by Malla who is just 25 years
old while Kanchana the official keyboardist also plays for the Derana
Dream Star group. ‘Crossroads’ are now featured at Excel World on
Fridays playing a repertoire pop, Sinhala pop, jazz, rock in the heavy
idiom “unravels Fabian in that husky voice of his.
Listening to his singing you immediately think of Rod Stewart and the
song Maggie May. In fact on stage he emulates Rod Stewart, ‘cos he is an
ardent fan of his and also enjoys singing the songs of Bon Jovi,
Journeys and Scorpion. “When we perform Scorpion’s song Winds of Change
I ensure that all the lights are knocked off and the song is performed
in candle light. It has gone down well with the groovers who turn up on
Friday nights”.
Have you ventured into recording Sinhala songs? “Yes, I have recorded
two songs so far. There’s Sonduru Mathakaye which was produced by Aruna
Liam and the second is Adare which was written by Buddhika Kulasekera.
Hiru FM was the first to air Sonduru Mathakaye.
Thanks to Aravinda it became very popular. I hope to record a video
with the song Adare. You know along with Aruna Liam’s collaboration we
want to change some of the Sinhala pop songs into classic rock and I
hope we succeed.”
Crossroads since February, the month they launched off have met with
success thanks to Imran Paccir Saibo who has helped them in getting gigs
for weddings, corporate functions and dances.
“I want ‘Crossroads’ to be a leading band in our music scene playing
a wide repertoire of music. Since my young days I’ve been singing in a
church choir and when I reach 45 years of age I want to be a total
gospel singer” remarked Fabion in that husky, gravel voice of his.
