RUGBY AWARDS: Caltex - Observer rugby awards for 2008 were made by
Chevron Lubricants Lanka PLC at a simple ceremony held at their head
office in Kollupitiya last Friday (July 17).
At this ceremony, presentations were made to the ‘Most Popular Rugby
Player for 2008’ (Wasim Thajudeen of Havelocks SC) and the ‘Most Popular
Rugby Club for 2008’ (Havelocks SC) based on selections made through a
competition, jointly held with the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon
Limited (ANCL), during the months of May to September last year.
Similar to previous years, the Caltex-Observer titles for the dual
contests of ‘Most Popular Rugby Club 2008’ and ‘Most Popular Rugby
Player 2008’ were close right upto their conclusion. However, Wasim
Thajudeen from Havelocks SC and a former S. Thomas’ College rugby star
was successful in bagging the majority of votes to emerge as the most
popular rugby player for last year. Then Havelocks led by Kavinda
Jayasena was chosen by the readers as the most popular rugby club, a
fitting reward for ending as the third place side in the Caltex Cup
League tournament in 2008.This also marked the first time that both
titles had been awarded to Havelocks SC, in the history of the Caltex-Observer
Touchdown Rugby Quiz. Speaking at the awards ceremony, Managing Director
cum CEO of Chevron Lubricants Lanka PLC Kishu Gomes noted that his firm
has long supported the game of rugby in Sri Lanka.
“As the sponsors of the Inter-Club League and the Clifford Cup
Knock-Out Tournament we have proudly watched the sport grow and develop
over the past decade.”
When we took over the sponsorship in 1999, our management had a
dream. It was to popularise the game and make it grow, both as a
spectator sport and increase team participation, hence this contest has
been a huge boost to achieving those ends, said Gomes. Having completed
a decade in their sponsorship of rugby, Gomes said that it has been
rewarding for Caltex. Over the last ten years, we have seen significant
development of the game of rugby which has added value to both the sport
and in turn to the organisation by complementing our brand personality
of Power, Energy and Speed.
The awards ceremony was also graced by the Editor-in-Chief of the
Sunday Observer, Dinesh Weerawansa and officials of Havelocks SC and
Chevron Lubricants Lanka PLC.
