OBSERVER-CALTEX Rugby Contests on again!
RUGBY: The Observer-Caltex Most Popular Ruggerite and Rugger Club
competition will be on again for the 9th consecutive occasion.
Coupon No.1 will appear in today's Sunday Observer (26.7.2009) page
25 and will close on 1.8.09. Coupon No.2 will appear on 2.8.2009.
This ever popular competition began in 2001 and with the Associated
Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd. and Caltex Lubricants joining hands and giving
readers the chance to elect their players through a poll.
All recipients of the award have been Sri Lanka ruggerites. The
winner of the award in the inaugural year (2001) was that tough Army and
Sri Lanka flanker Herathge Karunaratne followed by Army and Sri Lanka
full back T. A. Silva. Among the other recipients of the awards are
'crack' CR&FC and Sri Lanka number '8' Dushantha Lewke who won the award
in 2005/06. The winner in 2004 was the present Sri Lanka captain
Pavithra Fernando a fierce tackler and a terrific player in the loose.
That dazzling winger Sanjeeva Jayasinghe who has thrilled the crowds
in International Sevens competitions won the award in 2007, followed by
Sri Lanka and Havelocks winger Wasim Thajudeen.
