Sustainable project propels Heritance Kandalama
As Asia's first green globe certified hotel and a range of best
practices in sustainable tourism, Heritance Kandalama has rapidly carved
a niche in the region's hospitality industry.
The latest attempt addresses the biggest Global problem: Climate
Change which is a result of Global warming created by the emission of
Green House Gases. The major portion of these emission is Carbon
Dioxide. The Gasification plant uses biomass in the form of Grilicedia
wood which is a renewable source compared with the existing boiler which
uses diesel, a rapidly depleting fossil fuel. The process is environment
friendly for many reasons.
It uses a renewable source instead of a depleting source, the amount
of carbon dioxide emitted is drastically reduced. Valuable foreign
exchange spent to import fuel is saved, further the community has a
financial benefit when wood is supplied to the hotel abandoned and
fallow lands are enriched when grown with Grilicedia as the nodules in
the roots nitrogenize the soil. The leaves provide fodder for livestock
which will again raise the income of the villagers and increase the milk
supply in the area thus contributing to better public health and saving
of foreign exchange to import powdered milk which is not healthy.
The leaves if not used for livestock can be used as mulch to
fertilize the soil, prevent erosion and prevent drying up especially in
the dry zone.
This is the best species for dry zone degraded marginal lands which
can be harvested every six months. An annual yield of 74 tonnes of woody
mass at the required moisture level of 20% from an acre is obtained.
The anticipated saving of Carbon dioxide will be 500 tonnes from the
Heritance Kandalama plant while 250 tonnes is already being saved at the
Tea Factory at Kandapola.
The Gasifier project will not only benefit the environment, it will
help the surrounding communities by financially securing them and
uplifting their livelihood. In keeping with the company's commitment
toward the environment, Greening the Chain is the ultimate objective of
Heritance and Aitken Spence Hotels.
