IT an A/L subject

The Education Ministry has decided to introduce Information Technology (IT) as a subject for the Advanced Level curriculum this year in line with the President’s initiative to arm the younger generation with a knowledge of English and Information Technology, Education Ministry sources said.

Students can study IT as a subject from 2011 for the first time in the history of education.

The Education Ministry has taken steps to train 62,000 teachers out of 218,000 to teach IT.

The Ministry has planned to train 100,000 teachers while another 12,000 teachers will receive subject centred training.

The Ruwanpura College of Education which will commence academic activities shortly will be converted into an IT education centre.

The Ministry has provided infrastructure facilities for all Information Technology teachers and would provide a computer laboratory for all Advanced Level classes in schools.
