White Cane Day on 15th
The President of the Blind Citizens Front M.C.
Jayasiri has made an appeal, particularly to vehicle drivers, to be
extra cautious towards blind people who may be walking with the aid
of white canes on the roads.
He made this appeal in a message to mark the World
White Cane Day, which falls on October 15.
The message is as follows:
“Two out of three pedestrians killed or seriously
injured are under 15 or over 60 years of age. The young and the
elderly may not judge the speeds of vehicles very well and may step
into the road when you do not expect them to.
Watch out for visually impaired people who may be
carrying white sticks, and watch out for the disabled and infirm.
Give them plenty of time to cross the road. Remember
that hearing impaired people may not hear your vehicle approaching.
“A word of caution for the public as well.
Travelling on our highways is increasing. Even blind people carrying
white sticks are more on the move. So be careful if you are driving
a vehicle or taking a walk.
Watch out for traffic lights, observe safety and
traffic regulations. The life you save may be your own.”

the cage and re-fixed to the jaw, had to be performed at the age of
two, two surgeries to be done one after another.
