The foundation stone for the proposed
Additional District Court building for the Fort, Matara

Opening of Community Hall
Youth Empowerment and Socio-economic Development
Minister Arumugan Thondaman open yesterday a new Community Hall and
Shrine Room constructed for the benefit of the residents of Dehiwala
Vanarathana Road Low Income Housing Scheme.
The building was constructed by the Ministry at a
cost of Rs.1.5 million on President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s
instructions.
There are 300 houses in the scheme.
In addition to the shrine room, it consists of
facilities for conference hall, reading room, library and computer
and vocational training centres.
Diyawadana Nilame denies allegations of funding
Diyawadana Nilame, of Kandy Dalada Maligawa Pradeep
Nilanga Dela said that there was no attempt by him to secure cash
donations to fund President Mahinda Rajapaksa's election campaign.
He said that there were misleading Media reports to
the effect that a special meeting was conveyed recently and all
Basnayake Nilames were requested to provide Rs. 5 million each
towards the President's campaign. "This is totally false," he said.
"First the meeting was a routine one and it was not
specially called to collect funds for the election campaign," he
said. The meeting was about providing welfare measures to the
farmers," he said.

Krishnamurti talk
A recorded public talk on 'We are caught in Habit'
delivered by the late Indian philosopher J. Krishnamurti will be
replayed at Anula Nursery School hall, 310, High Level Road, Colombo
6 today, January 24 at 9.45 am. The talk is organised by the
Krishnamurti Centre, Sri Lanka Inc.
Prayers and religious lectures
The programme will commence today, Jan. 24, with
Rathibathul Jalaliya by Moulavi A. B. M. Mubarak (Falahi) and Y. M.
Rafi which will be conducted after Magrib prayers and will continue
till Isha prayers.
A religious lecture will also be conducted by
Ashsheikh Dr. P.C. Pakkeer Jaufer, (Head/Department of Special Needs
Education, Open University of Sri Lanka) after Isha prayers at
Nawala Jummah Mosque.
Appeal
Visharada Deshapriya Mihiripenna, son of award
winning dancer Dr. Basil Mihiripenna has admitted himself to the
Ragama hospital for treatment for a complication suffered from an
injection.
The Mihiripenna Kala Academy said it has launched a
fund to assist Visharada Deshapriya and requested artistes and the
public to assist his cause.

President at Thurstan anniversary
President Mahinda Rajapaksa, a distinguished old boy
of Thurstan College will grace its 60th anniversary celebrations as
the chief guest at the college premises this morning.
The Principal and members of the OBU will receive
the President and escort him to the Buddhist shrine room. Later the
President and OBU members will pay floral tribute to the monument
erected in the college premises to commemorate the school’s war
heroes.
Teachers, students and parents will also
participate.

Meditation for a Peaceful Election
The Sarvodaya Shramadana Sangamaya has initiated a
program called ‘Meditation for a Peaceful Election.’The 12-day
initiative started on January 18 and will continue till January
29.The main meditation program will be held at the Vihara Maha Devi
Park, Colombo from 3 - 5 p.m. today.
