Renown thrash Maligawatta YSC 8-0

FOOTBALL: Renown SC, the 2009 Premier League Champions recorded a resounding 8 goals to nil victory over Maligawatta Youth SC in the first-quarter-final match of the City Football League Division One clubs invitation knock-out tournament for Phoenix Cup played at the City League ground yesterday.

The tournament is sponsored by Phoenix Industries Limited.

Renown SC's strong outfit played with better understanding and demonstrated their skill with strikers moving methodically.

The supremacy of Renown was never in doubt and during the first half they netted 5 goals through M. Riyaz (3) and Dilan Perera (2).

Maligawatta Youth SC went on the defensive whereas Renown SC continued to maintain man-to-man game systematically and attacked relentlessly and increased the lead to 8 goals coming from M. Fazxloon, M. Rasheed (penalty), M. Suhail (penalty).

Renown SC became the first team enter the semi-finals and will meet the winners of Blue Star SC and Java Lane SC on February 6.

Today Blue Star SC will meet Java Lane SC in the second-quarter finals. The other two quarter-finals - Cooray SC vs Old Bens SC on January 30 and Ratnam SC v New Young SC on January 31.

Ruwan Dissanayake, Sales Manager, Phoenix Industries Limited was the chief guest yesterday.
