Josephians win by an innings
by S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Corr.
CRICKET: St. Joseph's College, Maradana made amends for their last
week's debacle against Royal College when they crushed to an innings and
13-run win over the high riding Trinity College in their inter-school
cricket match concluded at the Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy yesterday.
Their victory came around 3.45 p.m.
Trinity met their Waterloo as a result of weak kneed batting against
the pace of medium pacer Dinal Dambarage who took 3 for 36 and 5 for 56
to end up with excellent figures of 8 for 92. The Josephians continuing
their overnight score of 182 for 4 declared their innings closed at 298
for 9 in 84 overs. Eurico Silva top scored with 87 which had 12 fours
made in 176 balls. He put 56 for the second wicket with S.
Samarawickrama (40) 65 for 3rd wicket with S.A. Jayatillake (19) and 45
for the fifth wicket with R.P. Thathil (44). This hoisted the Josephian
innings and made the ground work for their bowlers to do the rest.
Trinitians trailing behind by 180 runs, were off to a shock start
losing opener Kithmal Wimalaweera in the first ball of the innings to
Dambarage. This started the rot and later they were reeling at 5 for 25
and this later became 61 for 7. It was only a heroic knock of 46 not out
with 5 fours off 60 balls by skipper Mohamed Sajad which delayed the
Josephian victory. Earlier Kavinda Jayasuriya (43) and Kheliya Athugoda
(22) were the only batsmen to defy the Josephian attack.
Trinity: 118 all out and 167 all out in 39.2 overs (Kavinda
Jayasuriya 43, Kheliya Athugoda 22, Mohamed Sajid not out 46, Dinal
Dambarage 5 for 56, S.A. Chathuranga Kumara 3 for 43, Supeshala
Jayatilaka 2 for 16).
St. Joseph's: 182 for 4 wickets overnight continued 298 for 9 wickets
declared in 84 overs (M.A.C. Bernadus 14, Sadeera Samarawickrama 40,
Eurico Silva 87, Joan Jayasinghe 28, Rosco Thathil 44, S.A. Jaytillaka
