One small step a success!
According to Scottish reviewer
Beth Friend, ‘One Small Step’ documents the scientific rivalry which
grew between the Soviet Union and USA in 1957, triggering a race to send
the first man to the moon. The play spurs forward like an eccentric
history lesson punctuated with wit and superb characterisation. She said
that the set mirrors the appearance of a grandparent’s attic, cluttered
with sheets, 1950’s record players and boxes. But from these objects
emerge the magic of the show.
Talented acting duo Robin Hemmings and Oliver Hollis carry the
audience through history aided only by household objects and limitless
imagination. The creativity of Tim Boyd’s design makes this production
unforgettable. Sugar pots become space pods, beach balls become atomic
bombs and a filing cabinet serves as the steps Neil Armstrong descends
to reach the moon’s surface.
The effect is an imaginative, captivating and visually stunning
drama. “I left feeling thoroughly entertained not to mention far more
knowledgeable on a period of history which should be eternally
remembered and celebrated” she said.
In Singapore, Austin Lawler, the Oxford playhouse company stage
manager said that it was a truly exhilarating experience. “There was
tension before hand, we were told they were coming but would they
actually turn up? The actors were anxious about their portrayal of
American accents and we were all concerned as to how the play would be
received.
But, we need not have worried. At the end of the play the men from
NASA both rose to their feet and led a standing ovation... Job done!” he
concluded. However, you should catch the play on March 26 at the St.
John’s College Hall in Jaffna and at the Punchi theatre in Colombo on
March 29 and 30. |
