Most varsity students filled application forms improperly
by Kamalanath Liyanage
Senior Assistant Secretary, University Admissions of the University
Grants Commission (UGC) Priyantha Premakumara said that most of the
students who had applied for university admission had not filled their
application forms properly.
The UGC Secretary told the Sunday Observer that the names of students
selected to the universities will be released in June.
He said it takes three months to complete the selection process from
the closing date of applications, February 26. But, this may vary
depending on the response to the re-correction process.
Premakumara said only students who had already applied to the
university, can make further amendments to their application forms on or
before March 26, 2010. To accomplish this task, those students should
call over at the UGC premises and fill a special form.
Premakumara said, most of the students had not perused the contents
carefully to fill the application forms.
Therefore, he called upon all students to study the guidelines which
are specified in the booklet, Admission undergraduate courses of the
universities in Sri Lanka Academic year 2009/2010 and check whether the
application forms need further amendments.
The UGC has decided to select 21,000 students among the 50,000
applicants based on their all-island merit, district merit, educational
advancement of the schooling district and students proven colours on
extracurricular activities.
The commission has decided to increase the student intake by 1,000
this year for the universities and will launch a new Information
Technology and Management degree program at the Moratuwa University.
During this academic year non-Tamil students can join the Northern
and Eastern universities directly, he said.
