Aasmee, the Sri Lankan delicacy

Ganegoda - Amupitiya ever ready for a tall order:

Ganegoda - Amupitiya, twin villages situated below the famous hill 'MaligaKanda', about five kilometres off Eheliyagoda town is popular at present as Aasmee Gammanaya , where nearly 50 to 60 housewives produce Aasmee or oil sweets, as self-employment.

These enterprising housewives prepare this delicious local sweet variety which has a great demand.

Aasmee is a requirement at all Buddhist wedding ceremonies, dane (alms-giving) as well as other functions, as it adds an extra beauty and attraction to the table.

Housewives say that preparing oil sweets is an extra source of income and a hobby.

We need transport facilities and a permanent market for our products, We can cater to large orders instantly. But lack of Dayul Kurundu or small leaf variety of cinnamon is an ingredient in preparing the sticky substance called Naanu they say. The calm and cold village abound is with different types of rare birds as the mist-capped hill slope is rich with natural fountains that supply pure water for the villagers.
