Education for all at an affordable cost - Prof. Vidanapathirana
by Nilma Dole
“Thanks to our high literacy rate, Sri Lankans place a high value on
education but it can be so much that they go to the extent of mortgaging
their properties to send their children abroad for higher studies,” said
Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Upali Vidanapathirana.
He added, “We don’t need to drain money out of our country by
remitting it elsewhere and our education system is good which is
available at an affordable cost.
This can minimise many going into debt by spending money in
international universities and give monetary benefits for our country.”
The Open University recently celebrated its 30th anniversary with a
3-day exhibition and Open Day where potential students can browse around
the four faculties and decide in an area to specialise in.
Different streams
The subjects are Health Sciences, Engineering and IT, Education and
Law.
“We are also the first in Sri Lanka to have a fully-equipped
Mechatronics laboratory and also were the first to start the Industrial
Automation course which has given plenty of jobs to our students”, said
the Professor.
He said, “We can safely say that more than our actual in-house
courses at the Open University, we have one of the best online distance
learning courses where even international students have expressed
interest.”
The Open University is renowned for its prestigious law and
pre-school childhood development programs which have made it a reputed
university in the employment sector.
