SPORTS AWARD: Ashoka Eric Hulangamuwa of Matale was one of the
recipients of the ‘Vikum Prasadhini’ Award for sports presented by the
Matale Old Thomians Association at its 5th Annual ‘Top Ten Awards’
ceremony held at Matale recently.
Eric represented the St. Thomas’ Matale hockey team in late seventies
and also represented Sri Lanka Schools team in 1979. He represented the
Sri Lanka Youth hockey team for 3 successive years from 1977 to 1979.
In athletics, is a fine sprinter and won the 100 and 200 metres at
the Central Province Athletic Meet held in the year 1975. He is the 1st
Thomian to be selected as a Secretary of the Hockey Federation of Sri
Lanka for 3 years.
He is also instrumental in forming the Colombo Branch of the Old Boys
Association of St. Thomas’ Matale and became its 1st Secretary in 1987.
Hulangamuwa organised the 1st Hockey Big Match between St. Thomas’ and
Zahira College, Matale in the year 1980 and it has become an annual
event.
Also the hockey match he has organised between Colombo Br. and Matale
Mother Union has become an annual event.
