Quality award winner
The Milfora M. Gatchalian Medal for Women in Global Quality
Leadership awarded by the Asia Pacific Quality Foundation headquartered
in the Philippines was won by Managing Director Quality International
Technical Services Ms Mangalika de Silva Certification Services and
Quality International (the first local private certification body in Sri
Lnaka) last week in India.
The medal is presented to a woman professional who has distinguished
herself as a person with known integrity and is recognised for her
outstanding contribution to the promotion of quality innovation and
practice in the Asia Pacific region. Ms De Silva was nominated for the
award by the Sri Lanka Association for Quality (SLAQ).
She started her career as a voluntary teacher and moved on to the Tea
Research Institute for a short spell.
Her next posting was at the Sri Lanka Standards Institute (SLSI)
where she worked for 11 years. She also works as a trainer for SLSI and
SLAQ.
Sanasa in Kilinochchi

Sanasa Development Bank Ltd’s (SDBL) 69th customer service centre was
opened recently in Kilinochchi by Namal Rajapaksa, MP. Also in the
picture are Uditha Lokubandara, MP and General Manager /CEO of SDBL,
Nimal Mamaduwa.
TV Derana bags four awards

TV Derana bagged four awards at the prestigious Rupavahini State
Awards Ceremony held at the Youth Centre Maharagama recently. The
Ceremony was held under the patronage of . Prime Minister D. M.
Jayaratna. The awards won were for Best Live Program Ruwaththi; Best
Stag Backdrop Design, Chandika Weragama (for Derana Little Star finals);
Best Multi-Camera Production, Chathurani Abeysundera (for Derana Little
Star) and Best Educational and Cultural Program, Ranjeevani Baddevithana
(Hela Bodu Punarudaya)
SLT provides books to libraries
Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) in collaboration with the Asia Foundation
embarked on a series of book distribution programs in September to
commemorate International Literacy Day under its CSR initiative,
‘Spreading the wealth of knowledge’.
The first of these programs, which was conducted in Galle, provided
books to libraries of five schools - Batemulla Maha Vidyalaya, Pilana
Vidyarthodaya Vidyalaya, Hapugala Maha Vidyalaya, Meepawala Amarasooriya
Vidyalaya, Sangamitta College, Mahinda College and to the Karapitiya
Hospital.
Books were distributed on a range of subject areas including English
Language, Geography, Science, and Mathematics. The programs organised
for the month will cover schools and public libraries in all parts of
Sri Lanka.
Low literacy is a major concern the world over.
According to UNESCO, today, one in five adults is illiterate, out of
which two thirds are women; almost 75 million children do not attend
school.
Seminar on productivity
A seminar on productivity will be held at the Galle Face Hotel on
October 16 from 9 am to 1.30 pm. The chief guest will be Minister of
Labour Gamini Lokuge.
Trendywear opens in Nuwara Eliya
A new BOI venture Trendywear (Pvt) Ltd, at Adhikarigama, Nuwara Eliya
was opened recently by Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa.
The factory with an investment of Rs.315 million will provide employment
for 1000 workers. The state-of-the-art factory is equipped with the
latest machinery and eco-friendly facilities.
Trendywear manufactures and exports high quality ladies and
children’s wear to the USA, UK, France and Switzerland. |
