The stretch of Galle road from Kollupitiya junction to Bambalapitiya
junction will be developed as a five lane one way model road to
facilitate the smooth flow of traffic, Colombo Municipal Council Special
Commissioner Omar Kamil told the Sunday Observer.
He said the reconstruction work of this project was inaugurated
yesterday to be completed within the next few months on priority basis.
The centermediums on this stretch will be removed as a part of this
project to improve it as a five lane road and will be recarpeted.
"We are improving the road as a model road after creating parking
bays and pelican crossings to enable people to cross the road", he said.
As a part of this project the lamp posts along the road will also be
replaced with new ones and the power lines are now being cut for the
removal of the lamp posts.
"We are recarpeting this stretch of Galle road after 1987", Kamil
added.
He said the project will cost the Colombo Municipal Council around
Rs.75 million.
He said the project was initiated under the directive of President
Mahinda Rajapaksa and Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
This stretch of Galle road remains unchanged despite the introduction
of the uniflow traffic system in the Colombo city.
The CMC launched several projects to improve the road network within
the Colombo city to suit the uniflow traffic system changing roundabouts
and the traffic signal system. |
