Mannar, Jaffna salterns being developed

The salterns in the Mannar and Jaffna districts are now being developed, said Manthai Salt Ltd (MSL) Chairman A.K.M. Shihabdeen.

The Government has allocated Rs. 250 million for the preliminary development of the traditional salterns which produce 5,000 MT of salt annually, he said.

The production capacity of the Manthai Saltern in Mannar will increase by 50 percent after the completion of the development work. The feasibility study undertaken on the Chemmani saltern in Jaffna will be completed soon, he said.

Production at these salterns suffered a severe setback during 30 years of LTTE terror.
