New intercity train to Kandy

A new weekend intercity train service between Colombo and Kandy will commence today, Railways Planning Director Vijaya Samarasinghe said.

The train will operate only on Saturdays and Sundays. The service will start from Colombo Fort at 9.30 a.m. and reach Kandy at 11.57 a.m. The return journey from Kandy will commence at 5.45 p.m. The estimated time of arrival in Colombo is 8.16 p.m.

The service will be in addition to the normal intercity services at 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. on all days including weekends.

The train will have four second class compartments and one observation compartment. The new service is a concept of Transport Minister Kumara Welgama.
