Measures to improve administration in North

Four Assistant Divisional Secretariat Divisions in the North have been upgraded to Divisional Secretariat Divisions with Cabinet approval, Public Administration and Home Affairs Ministry sources said.

Seventy nine administrative assistants have been appointed to the Government offices in the North. Moves are afoot to appoint translators and administrative officers. Thirty five persons have been appointed to the combined management service, a top ranked officer attached to the Ministry said.

These appointments have been made under the program of filling State sector vacancies in the North, he said.A competitive examination will also be held to select 60 officers to work in the Tamil medium, Ministry sources said.

The Government has also decided to appoint translators in Government offices in the North to solve language problems. Discussions are being held with the National Languages and Social Integration Ministry in this regard.

Government officers in the North brought to the attention of Minister W.D.J. Seneviratne the necessity of filling the vacancies in the North, during his visit to the region.

During the tour, the Minister appointed a Divisional Secretary to Neduntivu and promised the people that steps will also be taken to fill the remaining vacancies shortly.
