Prime Minister D.M.
Jayaratne last week visited the Sri Sudharmarama,
Etambagaskada, Vavuniya to open a new bell tower constructed
by the Army and participate in religious ceremonies. Here
the Prime Minister unveiling a plaque to mark the occasion.
Viharadhipathi Ven. Etambagaskada Kalyanatissa Thera and Ven.
Ellawala Medhananda Thera look on. This is the first time
that a Prime Minister visited this temple. Etambagaskada
was a Sinhalese village which was frequently attacked by the
LTTE. Villagers often sought refuge at this temple to escape
Tiger attacks. |

Inter-school Shakespeare drama competition 2011
The Inter-school Shakespeare Drama Competition organised jointly by
the Colombo YMCA and the Rotary Club of Colombo North will be held in
early October.
The selection of plays for the competition are:
Anthony and Cleopatra, Coriolanus, Love's Labour Lost, Measure for
Measure, Henry VI Part II, Taming of the Shrew, Othello, Twelfth Night.
Entries close on Friday Sept. 9.

Sisu Nena seminar held

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (ICASL) recently
conducted a seminar for commerce stream students in the Eastern Province
under its 'Sisu Nena' seminar series.
The seminar enlightened students on a number of Sri Lanka Accounting
standards that are applicable for the G.C.E. Advanced Level examination
and discussed the A/L. Accounting Model paper prepared by the institute.
Lecturer, I.L.A. Salam and K. Nagendrakumar conducted the session which
was applauded by the participating students. The seminar also
articulated the opportunities for career development in the field of
accounting. Nagendrakumar during his lecture also defined the Chartered
Accountancy qualification as a 'key' to a world of unlimited
opportunities.
B+ kidney needed

stage Renal Disease (ESRD). He requires a B positive kidney and has been
advised an immediate transplant.

Nepal to make film on the Buddha

An Indian film director of Nepali origin is now making the first
Buddha film from the Himalayan republic. Tulsi Ghimire, who moved from
India's hill town of Kalimpong to Mumbai first to learn acting and
film-making and then made Kathmandu his home, has begun making Gautam
Buddha, the first film on the Buddha from Nepal, the birthplace of the
apostle of peace. - inewsone
Death of D. H. Balachandra
The death occurred yesterday of Attorney-at-Law D. H. Balachandra. He
was the father of Samath Balachandra, a journalist attached to the Daily
News. He is also survived by his wife and three other children.
The remains lie at his residence at No. 168, Thimbirigasyaya Rd.,
Colombo 5.
The funeral will take place at 5 p.m. tomorrow at the General
Cemetery, Kanatte.
