Twenty five meet records and one equalled at Central Province schools meet

ATHLETICS: Twenty Five meet records were broken and one equalled at the annual Central Province Schools track and field championship organised by the Department of Education of the Central Province and worked off at the Bogambara Stadium, Kandy concluded on Friday.

Three girls lowered the existing record of 1.52 metres for girls under-17 high jump in the Central Province Schools Athletic Meet of Ministry of Education of Central Province held at the Bogambara Stadium, Kandy. In the centre R. Krithika of St. Thomas’ Girls College, Matale who cleared 1.63 metres, left is R.P.G. Harischandra of Dheerananda MV, Pilimatalawa who also registered 1.63 metres and on right S.M.T. Yasodara Udanganawa, Christ Church College, Matale 1.55 metres. - Pic: S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Cor.

Triple jump record in under-17 .... S.A. Nimesha Madushani of Galewela Central College with a distance of 10.31 metres who is in the centre flanked by second placed M.V.I. Madhushani of Sri Rahula College on left and third placed Hashini Theruka of Wallala A. Ratnayake Central College (third).

A record in 800 metres for girls under-17.... Naomi Jayasundera of Wallala A. Ratnayake Central Collage (centre) timed 2.22 minutes to register a new record in the 800 metres for under-17 event for girls. All three girls in this event were from the same school. On left is second placed Pramodha Abeysinghe (2m 22.6 seconds) and on right is third placed Sandamali Rajasekera (2 minutes 22.8 seconds).

Over 4000 athletes from the schools in the Central Province participated in this meet which was dominated by the girls who broke no less than 15 existing records and equalled another. The boys accounted for the balance 9 records.

One of the oldest records to be lowered was jointly by 15 year old Prithiba Ratnaswara of St. Thomas Convent, Matale and Prabodha Harischandra of Dheerananda Vidyalaya who leapt 1.63 metres to erase the existing record of 1.52 metres set up in 1997 in the event for girls under 17 high jump. Most of the records were set up by Wallala A. Ratnayake Central College, a school known for its prowess in the field of athletics. Schools from Galawala, Kotmale and the distant Wilgamuwa in the 'elephant country' of Wasgamuwa also set up new marks.

But most disappointing was performances of some of the leading schools in the capital who appeared to be swept aside by the little known schools. This performance by the rural schools augurs well for the future of the sport.

One of the best performances at this five day meet was by A.M.A.S. Bandara of Ranabima Royal College, Peradeniya who in the event for boys under 21 discus throw registered 37.57 metres improving on the existing record of 34.98 metres.
