Irrigation and Water Resources Management Minister Nimal Siripala De
Silva said his Ministry launched the Dam Safety and Water Resources
Planning Project (DSWRPP) recently.
He was addressing a media briefing at Mahaweli Centre last week. He
said 32 large reservoir dams have been identified for rehabilitation.
Major dams such as Polgolla, Victoria, Randenigala, Rantambe, Kotmale,
Maduru Oya, Chandrikawewa, Laxapana, Minneriya, Giritale, Rajangana,
Nuwara Wewa and Tissa Wewa are in need of repairs and regular
maintenance, he said.
The Minister said DSWRPP is one of the major investments which
supports the huge development projects launched by the Government.
The project has been designed to reduce water induced hazards to the
public, establish a hydro-meteorological information and management
system and improve planning and management of water resources to ensure
better use of water, the Minister said.
