Pakistan win as Windies shot out for 53 runs

Vivian Richards - made 33 in the West Indies first innings total of 248.

Richie Richardson made 54
for West Indies in the first
innings total of 248.

CRICKET: The West Indies had a shock defeat at the hands of Pakistan at Faisalabad under the captaincy of Vivian Richards in the Test played on October 24, 25, 27 and 28 in 1986. Pakistan won by 186 runs.

It was a terrible shock indeed! Chasing a target of 240 runs to win with more than a day to spare, the Windies were shot out for 53 runs - their lowest total. The previous lowest in Test was 76, which was also against Pakistan at Dacca (then East Pakistan) in 1958-59 when Fazal Mahmood was Pakistan's captain.

This was somewhat of a shock as West Indies led Pakistan by 89 runs on the first innings - Pakistan batted first and got somewhat of a poor score of 159 with Imran Khan top-scoring with 61. The Windies did well and made 248 runs in their first turn and no one ever thought that the West Indies will crumble for that poor total of 53 runs in their second turn Pakistan's Wasim Akram bowled best-6 for 91 in the first innings. The West Indies dominated the proceedings for the first three days restricting Pakistan's first innings to 159. Imran Khan held the Pakistan batting together in the first innings with a fine knock of 61 after five wickets had fallen for 37.

Imran Khan was seen in a dual role. He made 61 in Pakistan’s first innings total of 159 and then took 6 for 91 in West Indies 1st innings
total of 248.

Anthony Gray of West Indies took 4 for 39 in the Pakistan first innings of 159 and had 2 for 82 in Pakistan’s second innings score of 328.

he West Indies batted somewhat satisfactorily in the first innings to make 248 and with that lead of 89 runs, no one would have thought that the Windies would crumble for that poor score in their second innings.

The West Indies were in the driving seat after having the wickets of Mudassar Nazar and Rameez Raja before the stumps on the third day, for only 28 runs. But a fine stand for the third wicket between 'night watchman' Salim Yousuf (61) and Mohsin Khan (40) helped Pakistan finish up with 183 for 4 wickets by the end of the third day. There was also Wasim Akram who made 66 to push the score along to 328 and they led the West Indies by 239 runs.

Dujon - a 'pair'

Abdul Qadir had 1 for 58 in
the first innings of West Indies
- 248, but turned out to be
match winning bowler with 6
for 16 - and West Indies were
shot out for 53 in the second
innings.

Wasim Akram - made 66 in
the Pakistan second innings
total of 328 which helped them
to force victory. In the first
innings, Akram had 6 for 91 in
the West Indies first innings
total of 248.

The West Indies sensational collapse began soon after the tea interval Pakistan's Qadir, exploiting the rough of the bowler's mark, dismissed Gomes and Richards in one over and minutes later Dujon followed them, leg before to Imran Khan. Dujon bagged a pair in the match. The unbelievable collapse continued as West Indies were nine for 43. Qadir was on top and had the outstanding figures of 6 for 16 while Imran Khan had 4 for 30 and Windies were routed.

The final day was mere formality as it took only 31 deliveries in 25 minutes to get the last wicket, that of Marshall who was caught and bowled by Qadir. The ace Pakistan leg spinners finished with match figures of 7 for 74. However, the 'Man of the match' award went to Wasim Akram for his fine all round performance in the match.
