The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) last week opened a
24-hour Ombudsman Service at the newly established Migration Resources
Centre (MRC) at Bureau Headquarters, Battaramulla for the benefit of
over 1.4 million Sri Lankan expatriate workers.
Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare Minister Dilan Perera opened
the MRC which will also provide facilities for Sri Lankans to contact
friends and relatives working abroad via Skype.
Minister Dilan Perera told the Sunday Observer that it was a
non-sleeping e-ombudsman facility for the welfare of both Sri Lankan
expatriate workers and their families here.
He said this service will help Sri Lankans discuss employment
problems and grievances faced by them with their kith and kin. It will
also help settle various other disputes pertaining to workers.
The facilities of the MRC, which would be open round-the-clock are
provided free. The centre will also help Sri Lankans find foreign
employment through relatives living or working abroad.
Bureau Chairman Kingsley Ranawaka said the newly opened facility will
not only bridge the distance between migrant workers and their families
here, but also help local employment agents receive information on
workers and the difficulties faced by them. For further information the
