of the magazine Management Digest August 2011 was launched

Bar Association of
Sri Lanka honours five of its distinguished members: At
the 37th annual convocation of the Bar Association of Sri
Lanka, presided over by its President, Shibly Aziz, PC. His
Lordship the former Chief Justice Asoka de Silva was the
chief guest. The Honorary Life Membership (Honoris
Causa)were conferred on, Ranjith Abeysuriya, PC, a former

UN condemns Nigeria bombing
The United Nations Security Council has issued a statement denouncing
as a "heinous crime" the bombing of the UN headquarters in the Nigerian
capital, Abuja, that has killed at least 18 people.
Singapore votes for new president
SINGAPORE, (AFP) - Singaporeans voted yesterday in the city-state's
first contested presidential election in 18 years following a heated
campaign marked by calls for stronger checks on the ruling party.
Polls closed at 8:00 pm local time (1200 GMT) after having been open
for exactly 12 hours.
The winner is expected to be known within hours.
Local broadcaster Channel NewsAsia said on its website that 83
percent of those with a vote had cast their ballots by 5:00 pm.
Help: cochlear implant
Three-year-old Baby Vithun Ranneth Karannagoda is suffering from
severe to profound hearing loss which needs to be treated by a cochlea
implant, according to ENT Surgeon, Dr. Devanand Jha of Lanka Hospitals.
The estimated cost is around Rs. 2 m to 3.6 m. The parents of the
child appeal for help from generous donors. Contributions could be

Abnormal heart: an appeal for help
Mrs. E. W. Deepika, (36) of 5, Siri Piyananda Samarugramaya,
Godakanda, Kamburugamuwa, Matara, has been diagnosed with Recurrent
Right Ventricular Outflow Tract Ventricular Tachycardia, a condition
associated with abnormal electrical impulses within the heart, causing
irregular heart beats.
This condition has the potential of causing sudden cardiac death.
To correct this abnormality, she needs a percutaneous surgical
electrophysiological study and Frequent Ablation, Radio.
Dr. Rohan Gunawardena, Consultant Cardiac Electrophysiologist, will
perform the procedure, at the Asiri Surgical Hospital, which is
estimated to cost around Rupees two hundred thousand.
She appeals to the general public which could be made to A/C No.

Leukaemia patient appeals for help
Nine-year-old Fathima Riska daughter of trishaw driver S.A. Gafoor,
is suffering from leukaemia. He has two other children. On learning of
her child's illness mother died of a heart attack six months ago.
Local doctors have recommended that the sick child should undergo
surgery at Meenakshi Mission Hospital, and Research Centre in India.
The President's Fund has granted Rs. 125,000 for surgery and the
hospital has estimated the cost of the surgery to be Rs. 2.5 million.
Gafoor lives at 66F, St. Joseph's Street, Grandpass, Colombo 14,
appeals for public donations to save the life of his daughter.

Esala perehera begins on August 29

The Ratnapura Maha Saman Devalaya Esala Perehera will commence on
August 29, the final night perahera will be on September 11 and the
water cutting ceremony will be held at Ratmale ella - Kaluganga on
September 12.
The Kumbal Perehara will be held from 29 to 01, the Devale Perehara
will be held from 2 to 6 and the Maha Perehara will be held from 7 to
September 11.
The Bassnayake Nilame Maha Saman Devalaya, Sunil Shantha Weerasekara
has already given instruction to officials to provide all facilities to
devotees during the perehara season.
No Kandy-Mawilmada buses on Sundays

The Kandy South depot of the Sri Lanka Transport Board does not
operate the Kandy-Mawilmada town bus service on Sundays causing much
inconvenience to the residents of this highly populated area.There is no
bus service from Kandy to Mawilmada on Sundays and holidays. The only
bus which plies on this route is to Watapuluwa. |
