DAEGU, Aug 27. - Kenya underlined its long distance supremacy in the
very first event of the IAAF World Championships here today by making a
clean sweep in the women's marathon worked off this morning.
Winning the first gold medal of the Daegu 2011 World Championship was
Edna Ngeringwony Kiplagat who clocked two hours, 28 minutes and 43
seconds to secure the first place in the marathon worked off under ideal
weather condition today.
There was a tense battle for the silver and the bronze medal
Kiplagat's Kenyan compatriots Priscah Jeptoo (2:29:00) and Sharon
Jemutai Cherop (2:29:14) secured the second and third places after a
keenly contested tussle.
But Bezunesh Bekele of Ethiopia (2:29:21) made a desparate attempt to
stop the Kenyan dominance but she finally had to settle for the fourth
place, finishing a mere 0.07 seconds behind the bronze medallist.
