"Nirmalanjali" on Sept. 10
The twenty-fifth anniversary dance program of
"Nirmalanjali" will go on the boards at Ramakrishna Hall, Wellawatte
on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. with a spectacular ballet in Bharata
Natyam "Navarasa Virunthu".
At "Nirmalanjali", the school of dance founded by
Mrs. Nirmala John who is a leading exponent of Bharatha Natyham in
Sri Lanka with fame and international recognition emphasis is placed
on traditionalism, imparting the rich technique with all its
originality and purity of the Natyam, a classical dance with a long
history of ancient origin and spiritual affiliation, very popular
both in South India and Sri Lanka.
While Bharatha Natyam is strongly founded on Indian
literature the school has created new dimensions by absorbing the
literature of other languages, especially that of English.
"Navarasa Virunthu", the main item of the silver
jubilee program of Nirmalanjali also brings out remarkable
originality and innovation.
Love, surprise, valour, anger, humour, fear, mercy,
disgust and piety are said to be the main basic emotions of a human
being.
They are portrayed time and time again in Bhratha
Natyam recitals through "bava", the body language. The ballet
"Navarasa Virunthu" seeks to project these emotions totally with
colours and deities, and to add strength to the presentation,
through expressive episodes chosen from literature.
