“This monument unveiled today signifies not only our grief but
everlasting memory of their lives, lost for our today and for
generations to come.
As we live we should honour their memory by ensuring what they died
for lives on, not only in the hearts of all the people but in an united
and happy Sri Lanka free of violent and divisive strife and free of fear
and antagonism,” said Major (Rtd) W.M. Weerasooriya at the unveiling of
a war heroes memorial at Trinity College, Kandy recently.
He said” I consider it a very great honour, rare and a humble
privilege to be at the unveiling of this splendidly fitting monument to
those Old Boys of Trinity who laid down their lives for their country.
Although I am an outsider, being an old boy of Dharmaraja a retired Army
Officer. Yet one with strong and close ties to Trinity from 1957.
The request that I wish to make which I consider is a fitting tribute
is:
* Firstly – Nominate a day in the school calendar to pay floral
tributes and remember the Hero’s by the bereaved families, staff &
students of the School. Because they gave their today for our tomorrow.
* Secondly – to inculcate in the minds of the members of the staff
and the students of the School that the place where the Monument stands
is sacred. Because they gave their today for our tomorrow.
* Thirdly- At every School function to get the Chief Guest to make a
floral tribute to the Monument. Because they gave their today for our
tomorrow.
