Divi Neguma, a major impetus for development
Across the country nearly 2.5 million households
are saving with the ‘Divi Neguma’ national drive. In addition the
Samurdhi Movement generated Rs. 17 billion of compulsory savings, of
which Rs. 3 billion is on reserve. Nearly Rs. 15 billion in
voluntary savings are there in over 1,040 Samurdhi Banking Societies
functioning throughout the country.

Liberal Party celebrates Silver Jubilee
There is no doubt that early liberals had been
influenced by the Liberal Party of the United Kingdom (UK) but in
the 1930’s the Liberal Party of UK was diminishing as a major
political contender as a result of a major split and two major
groups of liberals joined the Conservative Party and newly formed
Labour Party and thus ending the dominance of the Liberal Party.

Chilly weather freezes farming upcountry
Many holiday makers in Nuwara Eliya during the
past two weeks likened the cold weather conditions that prevailed in
the area to that of England. Naturally, they regarded Nuwara Eliya
as Little England. A Sri Lankan national, residing in Australia said
he came down to his home town at Hava Eliya in Nuwara Eliya after
three years due to the unbearable cold weather currently that
prevail in the city of Sydney and suburban areas.
