Richard Dawkins’ session
On Friday January 20, Richard Dawkins appeared
for one hour at the Galle Literary festival. His talk was the first
event for which all tickets had sold out online, in Colombo and in
Galle a week before. There were people queueing outside the hall an
hour before his session. Once the doors opened, the crowd’s attitude
was one of focused determination, to secure the best seats in the
house.

of Michel Foucault as a historian and how he could inspire
innovative thinking about literature. In today's column my focus
will be on another distinguished French historian, although an
unorthodox one, Michel de Certeau (1925-1986). He has been
influenced by Foucault's writings, and at the same time has sought

Perhaps, one of the intriguing sessions of the
recently concluded HSBC Galle Literary Festival of 2012 was the
session under the above title which was a fine amalgam of
literature, politics, polemics, and responsibility in literature.
