and modernized library of Akuressa Maha Vidyalaya in Matra

One of the top priorities of President Rajapaksa's government is the
improvement of the system of education to suit the trends of the modern
world.
As such our students are the most privileged and fortunate section of
our society, said the chief guest Southern Province Governor Kumari
Balasuriya, she was speaking after the opening the library of Akuressa
Maha Vidyalaya in Matara. The 26 year old library has been refurbished
from funds provided by D. Ratnayake, a philanthropist and leading
entrepreneur.
Southern Province Minister of Education Chandima Rasaputhra, former
Southern Province Chief Minister H. G. Sirisena, Southern Provincial
Council Chairman Manoj Sirisena, Pradeshiya Sabha Chairmen and members,
education officials, and parents, teachers and students participated.
The Governor said that a number of new schemes has been implemented to
upgrade rural education.
All modern facilities would be provided to all rural schools in the
island.
She said a well-equipped library is a treasure of knowledge. Although
at present the students are exposed to modern communication methods and
technologies, they should not give up the habit of reading. Even with
the presence of Internet and other facilities, the value and the need of
books, newspapers and magazines remain unchanged.
