The media plays a very important role in shaping the lives of people
in this country. Of late, the media has enticed the women and children
to completely alter their lifestyles.
By using women as commodities, the media creates and aligns the
community with a new set of false values, said the Attorney General, Eva
Wanasundera PC delivering the keynote address at the Annual General
Meeting of the Asia Crime Prevention Foundation (ACPF) held at Galle
Face Hotel recently.
Former Chief Justice Parinda Ranasinghe was elected first Patron of
the Foundation. D.P. Kumarasinghe PC was elected President uncontested.
The Attorney General emphasised that crimes could be prevented if the
root causes are understood and the entry points of the person to the
criminal world.
It is the impact of a child's domestic environment that makes a
criminal.
It may be true that the literacy rate of prisoners is over 90%. But,
according to the research carried out in the prisons, majority of
criminals have not even passed their Grade 8. Children from broken
families are prone to crimes.
In addition to the lack of education and social skills they are faced
with the problem of social integration. Sometimes they are faced with
mental and psychological problems. In most occasions they are subject to
sexual or physical harassment, the Attorney General said. |
