Peterites hang on to force a draw
by Ranjan ANANDAPPA
Set to make 217 runs to win in 35 overs, St. Peter's hung on to force
a draw when they were badly placed with 183 for 9 with three overs more
to be bowled when bad light intervened in their school cricket match
against Royal at Reid Avenue yesterday.
Peterite skipper Shehan Fernando who scored 119 in the first innings
missed the opportunity of scoring his second hundred as he kept the
Peterite hoping flickering striking a resourceful 96 off 74 deliveries
with the aid of nine fours and five sixes. He was engaged in two useful
partnerships adding 87 runs for the second wicket with Janith Liyanage
(38) and another 49 runs for the fourth wicket with Lahiru Milantha
(21). With the dismissal of Lahiru Milantha who was run out and Shehan
Fernando in the quest of accelerating was caught by Heshan Kumarasiri of
Poorna Aluthge for 96 the Peterites lost their way and had to battle to
avoid defeat.
Earlier in reply to Royal's 252 St. Peter's were 220 for 8 overnight
and were all out for 250.
Royal in their second innings spearheaded by Imal Liyanage who top
scored with 81 of 80 deliveries containing 15 fours and three sixes saw
them reach 214. With Royal's first innings lead of two runs the
Peterites had to score 217 runs for an outright win and they were 183
for 9 in 32 overs when bad light stopped play with three more overs left
to be bowled.
