Finalising wards system in LG areas put off

Finalising the wards system in Local Government areas in accordance with the amended Local Government Elections Act has been postponed for the end of the year as public and volunteer organisations need more time to discuss it further, Secretary to the Provincial Councils and Local Government R.A.A.K. Ranawaka said yesterday.

He said although the National Committee was appointed to demarcate and name the wards under each Local Government body by May 31 it was postponed as volunteer organisations sought more time to discuss it.

“Therefore, it has been decided to discuss it further with people’s and volunteer organisations”, he said.He said the National Committee had already discussed it with recognised political parties when finalising its reports and continued discussions with the District level committees to ascertain whether those committees had adopted a proper procedure when demarcating and naming the wards.
