Large contingent of South Asian polls monitors for PC election
The Forum of Election Management Bodies of South Asia will deploy
larger-than-usual contingent of polls observers in Sri Lanka for the
forthcoming provincial council elections.
The South Asian observers are part of the three foreign bodies that
will cover the September polls to report on any malpractices taking
place during the election in the Northern, Central and North Western
provinces. They have been invited by Elections Commissioner Mahinda
Deshapriya.
A spokesperson for the Elections Secretariat said the South Asian
team will comprise three officers each from Bangladesh and Pakistan,
four from India, two each from the Maldives, Bhutan and Nepal and one
from Afghanistan.
A pre-assessment team from the Commonwealth comprising two members
who were here recently have left the country, their inputs will help
plan the composition of the Commonwealth team of monitors, the
spokesperson said adding that the regional body is expected to send in
several teams for the September polls as is their tradition.
The team from the Asian Association of Elections Authorities is
expected to arrive in the country shortly. |
