The South Asian observers are part of the three foreign bodies that will cover the September polls to report on any malpractices taking place during the election in the Northern, Central and North Western provinces. They have been invited by Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya.

A spokesperson for the Elections Secretariat said the South Asian team will comprise three officers each from Bangladesh and Pakistan, four from India, two each from the Maldives, Bhutan and Nepal and one from Afghanistan.

A pre-assessment team from the Commonwealth comprising two members who were here recently have left the country, their inputs will help plan the composition of the Commonwealth team of monitors, the spokesperson said adding that the regional body is expected to send in several teams for the September polls as is their tradition.

The team from the Asian Association of Elections Authorities is expected to arrive in the country shortly.
