MOSCOW, Aug. 10 - Double gold medallist at 2012 London Olympic Games,
Mo Farah lived up to expectations to give the first gold medal for Great
Britain at the 14th IAAF World Championship at Luzhniki Stadium here
today.
He underlined his supremacy with a season’s best 27 minutes and 21.71
seconds to win the men’s 10,000 final - only the second final of the
opening day, under lights.
The Somali-born long distance champion kept his cool to push Ibrahim
Jeilan (who beat Farah in Daegu 2011) to the second place, though the
Ethiopian surprise too clocked his season’s best 27:22.23.
Settling for the bronze behind Farah and Jeilan was Kenyan Paul
Kipngetich Tanui in 27:22.61.
Farah will now try and repeat his London 2012 distance double by
defending his 5,000m title next week. “I had the experience from two
years ago. I knew I just had to cover every move and the guys were going
to go out there to take a lot out of me.
I was just digging in, digging in. It was nice to come out here and
win it. Training’s been really hard,” he said.
“I’ve spent a lot of time away from my family and when I came home
for the Anniversary Games, my little daughter didn’t even recognise me.
But it’s definitely been worth it,” he added. |
