Surge of devotion reverberates the North

The temple of God Skanda, the ancient Maviddapuram Kovil in Kankesanthurai, today gleams with vibrant colours. Kankesanthurai, which was once blanketed and unreachable under the ‘high security’ condition, has changed drastically. People have moved back to their homes in the high security zone (HSZ) and life goes on while a gloomy past is vanishing in the sea of time.

Church of Our Lady of Matara:

A beacon of light to pilgrims

The church has become so well-known due to the miraculous statue of our heavenly mother enshrined in the church. Today the church stands as a beacon light to visitors, pilgrims, foreign visitors and to the entire Southern Province. This year the feast falls on her birthday, September 8.

It was April 1968. I was on an Aeroflot flight to Moscow via Karachi and Tashkent to attend an FAO/Soviet Union Seminar in Kiev. Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) was under construction and civilian flights too used the SLAF airstrip. It was my maiden flight.
