Rains to continue
by Naalir Jamaldeen
The atmospheric disturbances caused by the inter-monsoonal conditions
will persist in the vicinity of Sri Lanka.
Hence the current adverse weather will continue for the next few
days, duty forecaster Meryl Mendis told the Sunday Observer yesterday.
He said that showers or thundershowers will prevail in many parts of the
country. Fairly heavy falls are expected at around 150mm in some areas.
There may be temporary localised strong winds during thundershowers.
The public are advised to take precautionary measures to minimise the
damage caused due to lightning and thunder. They should refrain from
using electronic devices, Mendis said.
He said that deep sea and shallow water fishermen should be vigilant
and refrain from going out to sea.
Intermittent showers or thundershowers will occur in the sea areas
off the coast from Puttalam to Matara via Galle. Showers or
thundershowers will occur at several places in the other sea areas
around the island, he said.
The wind velocity will be 30 to 40 kilometres per hour. The sea areas
may be rough and will be dangerous during thundershowers as the wind
velocity is expected to increase up to 80kmph. Showers or thundershowers
will occur especially during the afternoon or night. Fairly heavy falls
measuring 100mm are also likely to occur at some places across the
country.
Mannar, Batticaloa, Colombo, Galle, Jaffna, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya,
Ratnapura and Trincomalee districts will experience heavy showers with
thunder and lightning, he said. |
