Programs to protect children

The Institute for Development of Community Strength, Matara has contributed largely to ensure the protection and safety of the children of low-income families in the district, according to some children's parents.

The Institute's director Condred Ranawake said that several programs are under way in the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Weligama, Matara, Devinuwara and Dickwella. Grama Niladhari Divisions such as Midigama North and Bandaramulle in Weligama Polhena and Totamuna in Matara, Welegoda in Devinuwara and Bathigama North in Dickwella have been identified to launch new projects.

Participants in these programs will be made aware of the prevalence of child abuse, sexually transmitted diseases and also how to protect themselves against these social scourges. They will also be provided with leadership training at these workshops.

Divisional Secretaries,child care officers and Grama Niladharis are participating as resource persons.

The Save the Children International coordinates these programs while it is managed by the Institute for Development of Community Strength Matara.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is funding the programs, Ranawake said.
