CHOGM in Sri Lanka
In the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Colombo, Sri Lanka
(CHOGM) 2013, P.W. Jayatilleke explains concisely the evolution of the
British Empire into Commonwealth, an association of self-governing
countries united by a common allegiance to the British Crown.
Jayatilleke is a resourceful writer who has already penned more than
a dozen of books on history, law and legal profession. With
decolonisation taking root in 1960s, most of the British Colonies have
become self-governing countries today.
The Commonwealth lost much of its verve and vitality, with the United
Nations Organisation extending its influence all over the world. Despite
the British Colonies becoming free and independent sovereign nations,
most of them continued to practise the British legal system and adopt
English as the lingua franca.
