Recently, I was reading an interesting memoir
titled Never too late by Anne Clark Martindell (1914 - 2008), an
American politician and diplomat. Martindell was a conventional
mother and housewife until she began a career at the age of 50.

Man’s best friend
Man has domesticated many animals, but only two
of those are carnivorous. Today, they are our constant companions -
the dog and the cat. Although cat lovers would disagree, the dog is
universally referred to as Man’s Best Friend. Even though the dog is
no longer the world’s foremost pet (that position now belongs to its
nemesis the cat), there is no denying that man and dog have an
inseparable, emotional bond that is not quite matched by its feline
counterpart.
