Livestock development projects in South

The Southern Provincial Agricultural Ministry has taken steps to enhance the animal husbandry and livestock development projects in the region.

The setting up of dairy farm villages, cattle and buffalo reproduction centres, construction and reconstruction of cattle sheds, distribution of hybrid cows at concessionary rates among dairy farmers, development of grass land through the cultivation of quality grass, setting up milk collecting centres and sale centres, distribution of liquid milk collecting appliances, development of small and medium scale poultry farms and many other promotional activities are included in these development programs, Assistant Directress of the SPC Department of Animal Production and Health H.D.S. Ramanayake said.

Many of these projects were successfully implemented last year as well in the Matara district. It has also targeted to further enhance the number of these projects this year too she said.

The Central Government and Southern Provincial Council funds are spent in this regard. The economic empowerment of families engaged in animal husbandry and livestock development activities is expected through these endeavours, Assistant Directress H.D.S. Ramanayake said.
