Project to achieve self-sufficiency in chillies

The Government has drawn up plans to make Sri Lanka self-sufficient in chillies by 2016. An islandwide campaign has been launched by the Ministry of Agriculture already. Quality plants of chillies and manure would be provided to the growers free by the Department of Agriculture.

One hundred and twenty five thousand gardeners, farmers and housewives in the Kurunegala and Puttalam districts would be provided with quality plants of chillies and manure packets free by the authorities. Ministry of Agriculture has deployed 250 Agricultural Instructors to provide expertise to these growers. Rs. 4.5 million would be invested in this project.

This project will be extended countrywide by the Ministry of Agriculture.
