Irishman Goodwin takes 5 for six runs and Riordan 4
for 18 :
West Indies shot out for 25 runs
by A.C.De Silva
Londonderry, North Ireland, July 2, 1969 ever heard of the West
Indies cricket team being bundled out for 25 runs?
This did happen sometime back when the Windies collapsed
sensationally in their one-day match against West Indies in Londonderry
(North Ireland) on a very green and somewhat wet wicket.
Ireland's medium pacers Deng Goodwin (5 for 6) and Alec O'Riordan (4
for 18) mowed the West Indian batsmen down.
West Indian batting stars Steve Lomacho, Basil Batcher and Clive
Lloyd Could muster only for runs between them. Butcher made two and
Lloyd and Camacho one each.
West Indian team manager Clyde Walcott in his Test days, one of the
World's greatest batsmen, made one of his rare playing appearances in
the match and scored six.
Generously Walcott gave the Irish full credit for their magical
display where they routed the might of the West Indies.
"They bowled well and took their catches", Walcott said," we made too
many bad strokes," he said.
The West Indians' lowest score in a first-days match in the British
Isles is 50 against Yorkshire at Hamugate in 1956. This one-day match
was not a first class game.
Ireland passed the West Indies score for the loss of only one wicket
and decided to bat on.
Under one-day rules in the old days, this match was automatically
extend to two innings. But if time ran out before a decision was reached
on a two-innings basic, Ireland would win by nine wickets.
