Faisalabad, Pakistan... Leg-spinner Abdul Qadir dumped Australia to
an innings and 3-run defeat shortly before tea on the fifth and final
day of the second Test here in Faisalabad.
The touring team who had begun the day on 176 for 4 wickets, still
needing 157 runs to avoid an innings defeat, were bowled out for 330,
leaving Pakistan victors by an innings and 3 runs.
Hopes that the Australians would save the match were raised during
the morning session when 22 year-old Greg Ritchie, playing in only his
Second Test, carried the fight to the Pakistanis.
The Australians lost only one wicket during the session, Peter Sleep
falling to a catch at deep square leg when he misjudged a sweep shot to
give leg-spinner Abdul Qadir his fifth wicket of the innings and his
ninth wicket of the match, for a allround total haul of 11 for 218,
taking 4 for 76 in the first innings and 7 for 142 in the second
innings.
Pakistan who batted first, made a handsome first innings score of 501
for six wickets and then closed their innings. There were two centurians
in the side- Zaheer Abbas 126, Mansoor Akhtar 111. For the Australians
Geoff Lawson 4 for 96 bowled best.
The somewhat massive score by the Pakistanis seemed too much for the
Aussies to handle and they were out for somewhat a poor score of 168 in
the first innings, with Abdul Qadir taking 4 for 76.
Asked to follow on, the Aussies had some hope in the early part of
the 2nd innings, with opening batsman B.M. Laird (60) and Greg Ritchie
(106 not out) trying their best to weather the storm of Qadir – the
Pakistani spinner, but it turned out to be a little too much for the
Aussies to tackle and the Pakistanis were home before tea on the final
day. Pakistan 1st Innings: 501 for 6 wkts dec. (Zaheer Abbas 126,
Mansoor Akhtar 111, G.F. Lawson 4 for 96).
