Tharindu Kaushal , a lad from Devapathiraja College , Ratgama ,Galle
won the Outstation Schoolboy CricketerOf The Year in 2012. He was not
only judged for the top spot, but also carried away the Best Bowler and
Best All-rounder’s awards .Kaushal has been showing promise at the early
age when he represented the school in all age groups in tournaments
conducted by the SLSCA.
The Master- In- Charge of Cricket at Devapathiraja, Nishantha Kumara
who has been guiding Kaushal with coach Ranjan Lasantha have been the
driving force at school.Nishantha Kumar said that it was quite
creditable for Tharindu Kaushal to reach the top even without the school
having a play ground. It has been shear dedication and commitment for
the youngster.
Kaushal’s physique seems to be an ideal one for an off spinner. His
above average height , easy approach to the wicket and round arm action
with the perfect balance should make him a very useful bowler .
While at school he played in the Under 19 World Cup, Asia Cup and was
also in the national pool for the New Zealand and Bangladesh Test tours.
After his school cricket career ,Kaushal was selected to represent
the Sri Lanka ‘A’ teams which gave him enough exposure and experience
which has no doubt helped him to develop his career as an off spinner.
Tharindu Kaushal did not play in the first Test against Pakistan at
Galle which Sri Lanka lost.
“ Two days before the second Test ,my skipper Angelo Mathews wanted
me to be ready to play in the second Test. I was delighted to hear the
news as it would be my first Test at home.” He also said that the day he
won the Outstation Schoolboy Cricketer Of The year 2012 was also a
memorable day for him.
Contests of this nature surely inspires young cricketers. Looking
back, the Sunday Observer/Mobitel Schoolboy Cricketer Of The Year
Contest has recognised the young talent which has brought the best for
the future.
