Rs. 630,000 foreign job scam:

Government dentist acquitted and discharged

Additional Magistrate of Marawila, Saliya Channa Abeyaratne has discharged and acquitted Y. Mallika Samarakoon, a dental surgeon attached to the Govt. Hospital Narammala, in a case where she was charged as the first accused with cheating, criminal misappropriation and criminal breach of trust committed in a sum of Rs. 630,000 on a promise of securing employment as a domestic aid in Cyprus to the complainant. These offences were said to have been committed by her along with her younger sister, the second accused Y. Nadee Priyanka Addara Arachchi, against whom was preferred a separate charge under Section 13 of the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau (SLFEB) Act. She, who was employed in Cyprus, was never arrested nor was she present in courts on any day, her whereabouts being unknown to the prosecution and even her own family including the 1st accused, resulting in the trial being held in her absence.
