The British Council celebrated World Elder's Day and World Children's
Day at the British Council Library on October 1.
Keith Davies, Country Director of British Council spoke about the
need to acknowledge, recognize and celebrate contributions made by the
elderly to society and the need to safeguard them from being abused and
exploited.
"There is also the issue of a level of invisibility and the
'embarrassment' linked to ageing in some of our arguably youth obsessed
societies," he said, pointing out, "Age is one of British Council's main
areas of diversity and is relevant to all of us in different ways."
Loraine Yu of the Lanka Alzheimer's Foundation gave a brief
introduction to their work dedicated to advocating and addressing the
needs of those diagnosed with cognitive impairment and dementia, and
invited parents and children to visit LankaAlzheimer's Foundation to get
an idea of their programmes especially designed for those who have been
diagnosed with dementia.
Complimentary memberships were also offered to loyal senior library
members and young learners recognising their relationship with the
British Council during the past years. |
