NCE helps exporters in North
The
National Chamber of Exporters (NCE) conducted a seminar for members of
the Chamber and producers in the Northern Province on the sidelines of
the Jaffna International Trade Fair (JITF) last month.
The NCE has helped people in the North by developing business links
between the members of the Chamber and producers in the North.
The NCE has over the past few years been actively engaged in a
project supported by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and
funded by AUSAID to link its members with producers of agricultural and
fisheries products in the North, to enable them to send their products
to international markets.
The project has already established firm business links between some
member companies of the Chamber and producers in the North, with
on-going contracts to supply agricultural products for export. After
participating in the JITF, the delegation of representatives of 11
member companies of the Chamber participated in a seminar and workshop
with producers in the North.
It was held in the auditorium of the Jaffna Library. Over 30 farmers
and producers from the North attended the event, which was coordinated
by the Yalpanam Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
Secretary General, NCE, Shiham Marikar briefed the participants
regarding the benefits in setting up links between members of the
Chamber and producers in the North. He highlighted the results already
achieved by the producers in the North and exporters in the South under
the Local Empowerment for Economic Development (LEED) project supported
by the ILO to sign additional contracts.
Deputy Provincial Director of Agriculture in the Northern Province,
J. Jeganathan outlined the current position and opportunities to export
agricultural products. The success of exporters, and exports from Sri
Lanka depends on the success of farmers.
The General Manager of the Palmyrah Board briefed the participants on
the progress regarding the supply of Palmyrah products.
The seminar was followed by a question and answer session. |
